George Keener Mcconnell, Jr.

Lillington - George Keener McConnell, Jr. of Lillington died on November 27, 2015 at Transitions Life Care Hospice Home after a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. McConnell was of the Christian faith. Born March 10, 1947 in Sylva, NC, George was beloved husband and son, “Papa George,” godfather, uncle, friend and educator. He was a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and Western Carolina University where he majored in industrial engineering. He retired in 2004 from Central Carolina Community College where he taught for 28 years. In addition to family and work, George enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. Since his retirement, he and his wife Martha have traveled thousands of miles in their RV enjoying the beautiful USA. He was an avid reader of Louis L’Amour and fan of true western movies and music. He is survived by wife Martha Hessman McConnell; brother-in-law Vincent Hessman (Peggy); nieces, nephews and many other beloved relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father George Keener McConnell, Sr. and his mother Sally Dowdle McConnell. Visitation will be on Monday from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier and is welcomed at other times at the home. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Bryan Lee Funeral Home, Angier. Burial will follow at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 .
