George Rosser Carter, Jr.

Raleigh-George Rosser Carter, Jr, 71, of Raleigh, NC went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 5, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born to the late Elizabeth Tip Hylton Carter and George Rosser Carter on September 10, 1942 in Danville, VA. He grew up on the family farm just inside North Carolina from Danville in the community of Gatewood, NC.George attended George Washington High School in Danville, VA. He then traveled to Raleigh, NC to attend North Carolina State University and later Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, where he met his future wife, Linda Barbee Carter.George was employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company from December 1968 until his retirement in December 2002. Although living the longest in Danville, VA, his tenure at Goodyear led him to reside in a variety of places including Canton, OH; San Angelo, TX; Atlanta, GA and Fort Smith, AR. In 2002, he retired to Raleigh, NC.He was an active member of a church in each of the places he lived, the longest membership being at Mount Vernon United Methodist in Danville. Since 2003, he has been involved in Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC, where he was a charter member. While living in Danville, George was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He helped to establish and served as a scoutmaster for Troop 300, served on the Blue Ridge Mountains Council and the Dan River District. He was also active in the Kiwanis Club of Danville, the United Way and the Hughes Orphanage in Danville. After retiring to Raleigh, George completed the Master Gardener Training Program and subsequently enjoyed helping to beautify and educate his community as a Master Gardener. He also had a small nursery on the family farm in Gatewood which was his passion.George is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Linda Barbee Carter; his son, George Rosser Ross Carter III, his wife Sarah and their two daughters, Rebecca and Mary Catherine, all of Clayton, NC; his daughter, Elizabeth Liz Carter Merritt , her husband Jeff and their two sons, Christopher and Cameron, all of Raleigh. He is also survived by his three sisters and their husbands: Betty and Leon Neal of Raleigh, India and Sid Causey of Wilmington, and Carolyn Carter and Lennie Green of Raleigh.A service to celebrate the life of George Carter will be held on Friday August 8, 2014 at 10:30am at Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. Interment will be held at 2:30pm at the Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Providence, NC.In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Building Fund at Christ Baptist Church, 400 Newton Road, Raleigh, NC 27615 or the Cemetery Fund at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 1705 Shady Grove Road, Providence, NC 27315.
