George Thomas Phillips

January 25, 1934 — September 19, 2015

Garner - George Thomas Phillips, 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday at Wake Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was born in Scotland Neck to Fred Hugh and Susie Dickens Phillips. On May 20, 1961, George married the former Daphne Bryant of Poplar, NC, a marriage spanning over 54 years. Mr. Phillips served in the US Army and afterwards attended   North Carolina State University on the GI Bill and graduated in 1960 with a degree in Civil Engineering and remained a proud lifelong ”Wolfpacker”. Upon graduation, he began and enjoyed a distinguished career with NC Department of Transportation for 36 years receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine upon retirement. He enjoyed a lengthy retirement and especially cherished the time he was able to spend with his four grandchildren who affectionately knew him as “Pop Pop”. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Garner with burial to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. Family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8 PM on Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, NC. He is survived in addition to his wife, a son, Chris and his wife Jenifer; daughter, Natalie, all of Raleigh; four grandchildren. Justin, Savannah, Miranda Phillips and Riley Blackmon, all of Raleigh; one brother, Marvin Phillips (Emily) of Raleigh; three sisters, Margaret Harrell of Scotland Neck, Pat Whitehead (RC) of Hobgood and Edna Sorie (Gene) of Scotland Neck. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care and support provided by his hometown church, First Baptist Church of Garner and Bethlehem Baptist Church of Knightdale. The family also gives special thanks to neighbors, Billy and Brenda Hodges for all their devotion, love and support over the past several years. Lastly, we cannot express enough gratitude to the hospital staff, doctors and nurses at Wake Medical Center for the exceptional care, love and support they gave to our Dad. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Garner Building fund 601 St Mary’s St. Garner, NC 27529.
