GARNER- George William Goodwin (“Bill”) Alderman passed from this earth Sunday, April 29, 2018 and will rest with his maker. Bill, as he was known, was born May 18, 1931 to Jacob Leroy and Mary Goodwin Alderman in the small town of St. Paul’s, NC. The family moved from St. Paul’s to Rolesville and then Garner, where he graduated from Garner High School in 1949. He was a standout football player with scholarship offers from Wake Forest and South Carolina, but he was and has always been a Tar Heel. He attended UNC from 1949-1951 and then 1955-1956, where he played freshman soccer. In the years in between, he served honorably in the US Air Force. After UNC, Bill remained in Chapel Hill and worked at Western Electric, then Hakan-Best and finally at Knott and Roberts Engineers until his retirement. He was responsible for the electrical and plumbing drawings for many of the Duke University buildings and for the expansion of the RDU Airport. He married Frances Rogers of Roseville on July 10, 1960 and then Marie Betts of Garner on June 12, 1995. Bill and Marie loved dancing, fishing and golfing while living in Morehead City and Garner, and throughout his life, Bill had the most amazing touch with all plants. He spent hours “piddling” in his gardens, which gave him such joy and rewarded everyone who had the chance to view his work with the glorious and delicious results. Bill was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, Mary Elizabeth Hufham and Jacob Leroy Alderman, Jr. and wife, Marie Betts Alderman. He is survived by his sister - Lucy “Sunshine” Bunch of Edenton, sons - Neil (Holly) Alderman and Scott (Suzanne) Alderman of Chapel Hill, step-daughter Donna Betts of Wilson, grandchildren Morgan, Joshua, Clayton, and Jessica and 5 nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. A Memorial service will be held at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, NC May 10, 2018 at 10:30 am with a visitation from 9:30-10:15.
