Rev. George W. Whitman Dec. 20, 1928 – Apr. 8, 2018 GARNER – Rev. George Wilson Whitman, Jr., 89, went home to be with his Lord Sunday. Born in Duplin County, he was the son of the late George Whitman, Sr. and Louise Coker Whitman. George was chef, manager, and eventually, co-owner of Finch’s Restaurant for 38 years. Upon retiring from Finch’s, he pastored Hayes Chapel Christian Church in Garner for 17 years. George loved teaching, preaching, helping others, and spreading joy through baking. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8:00 pm at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Clara Mitchell Whitman; his daughters, Diane Walls and Lisa Hatfield (Lloyd); son-in-law, Jim -husband of his deceased daughter, Georgia; grandchildren, Eric (Jamie), Adrian, John Lloyd (Carissa), Victor, Josh, Libby (Chris) and Jason (Heather); great-grandchildren, Isabel, Victoria, Michael, Quintin, Daniel, Trinity, Alyssa, Trent, Gavin, and CJ; his sisters, Betty (Wayne), Patricia (George) and Connie (Steve) ; brother-in-law, Jerry and sister-in-law, Rena, as well as many nieces and nephews, whom he dearly loved . In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Transitions LifeCare 250 Hospice Cr. Raleigh, NC 27607.
