Glinda Strother Saxon

July 15, 1939 — July 11, 2023

Glinda S. Saxon, 83, of Willow Springs, North Carolina received her wings to enter heaven to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 15, 1939 to the late Thomas and Beulah Strother, she was the youngest of two children and predeceased by her older brother, Thomas Henry Strother. She grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated from Broughton High School.

For the majority of her career, she was employed by the Big Star grocery store chain, later the Harris Teeter in the Village District (formerly Cameron Village). She began working in the bakery, moved to a cashier’s position, then training coordinator, and completed her career as a scanner coordinator. She was recognized in the Raleigh Times on November 29, 1983 in an article titled, “Life in the Express Lane.” Words from this article describe her positive, giving and loving personality:

“Even before a cart stops in her checkout lane, she’s unloading its contents, hitting the cash register, sweeping the item along the counter and into bags. All smooth, all effortless - and all done with a counterside manner that Dale Carnegie would be proud of. Glinda Saxon’s smile button is permanently turned on, her expression usually as bright and cheerful as the star on her red jacket. Forget your personal bankers. This is a personal checkout clerk - and her biggest fans refuse to let anyone else ring up their groceries at Cameron Village. “Hello, Glinda,” they say again and again. “Hello,” she says, calling them by name, asking about their dogs, their wives, their ailments. She finds out who had fried chicken and pigs feet for Thanksgiving dinner. She discusses the sales downtown. But most of all, she seems to take note that these are people, not robots, passing through her life.”

In her retirement years, she worked at Walmart and Lowe's. At the age of 67, she was admitted to the Wake Technical College program for Certified Nursing Assistants. She graduated and served several patients as a private duty CNA.

Glinda’s life was a living visual of a hard worker. She helped her daughter, Tammy Wilfong, in her cleaning business and daughter, Tracy Evans, at her salon. She never seemed to mind working. She always said, “If you are going to do any job, do your very best at it, even if your job is cleaning toilets.”

Her life was a reflection of the greatest commandment, Matthew 22:37-40, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.” Glinda enjoyed helping others and feeding the poor. She was always prepared with some kind of grocery items in the trunk of her car to give to someone in need. As an example to her children of unselfishness they would all go to take meals to other families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. On many occasions she witnessed to others with acts of kindness. She loved to laugh and cut up. She was loved by all who knew her. Glinda was a member of Aversboro Road Baptist Church in Garner, North Carolina.

Glinda is survived by her three children: Tammy Wilfong of Clayton, North Carolina, Vanirrh Davis (Julie) of Houston, Texas, and Tracy Evans (Tim) of Willow Springs, North Carolina; two grandchildren: Summer Evans of New York, New York and Dawson Davis of Houston, Texas; one sister, Judy Strother, and a nephew, Thomas Henry Stother, Jr., both of Garner, North Carolina. She is also survived by her two cats, Rusty and Mr. Kitty.

She is predeceased by her brother Thomas Henry Strother, Jr. and her grandson, Maxwell Dale Wilfong, Jr.

The family would like to express their love and appreciation for their mother’s caregivers:

Karen Hatch of Fuquay, North Carolina

Crystal Greene of Garner, North Carolina

Anna of Willow Springs, North Carolina
