Grayson Colby Murray, a life-long resident of Raleigh, NC, passed away on May 25, 2024, at the age of 30.
Grayson was born on October 1, 1993, to Eric and Terry Murray. He graduated from Leesville Road High School and attended Wake Forest University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State University before pursuing a career on the PGA Tour.
Grayson’s love of golf began at a very early age. He spent most weekends traveling with his dad to compete in junior golf tournaments. He won three straight Callaway Junior Championships from 2006 to 2008 and was the top-ranked golfer nationally in his age group. In high school, Grayson won both a team and individual state title. He was the second youngest player to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event at age 16, and he played as an amateur in the U.S. Open at age 19.
Grayson’s professional golf career began in 2016 with conditional status on the Web.com Tour. By 2017, he had earned his PGA card, and on July 23, 2017, he earned his first PGA Tour victory by winning the Barbasol Championship.
During the 2023 season, Grayson won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour, winning the AdventHealth Championship and the Simmons Bank Open. These two wins earned Grayson a tour card for the 2024 PGA Tour season. On January 14, 2024, Grayson earned his second PGA Tour victory by winning the Sony Open in Hawaii in a playoff by sinking a 39-foot birdie putt. As a result of this win, Grayson earned his way into the 2024 Masters Tournament, the Players Championship, and the PGA Championship.
When not on the road, Grayson enjoyed spending time and playing ball with his two dogs, Toby and Sadie. He loved his nephews, Dylan and Caleb, and face-timed with them when he was traveling. He enjoyed going to Carolina Hurricanes hockey games and was often asked to sound the siren before the start of games.
In addition to his parents, Grayson is survived by his brother, Cameron Murray; sister, Erica Murray Robinson (Brian); nephews, Dylan and Caleb Robinson; grandfather, John W. Watkins, Jr.; aunt, Virginia Gill; uncle, Fred Murray (Kathe), uncle, John W. Watkins, III (Jolene); and special friend Christiana Ritchie.
