Gretchen Parrish Mitchiner, almost 92, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, March 9, 2015, at her Whispering Pines apartment. She was born March 25, 1923, to the late Junius Moore Parrish and Alma Hall Parrish of Johnston County, NC. She was preceded in death by her loving and caring husband Joseph Elton Mitchiner, to whom she was married until his death in 1978, and infant daughter Camilla Reid Mitchiner; as well as her half-brother Howard Moore Parrish of Johnston County. Gretchen is survived by three children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of Raleigh except as noted—daughter Carol M. Carroll and family (Carol’s son C. Jeffrey Carroll and wife Kristen); daughter Judy Y. Jackson and family (Judy’s son Michael S. Yopp and wife Alison and their daughter Haley and son Parker; and Judy’s daughter Jennifer Yopp and husband Matthew Swindle and their son Cameron, of El Dorado Hills, CA); and son Joseph H. Mitchiner (wife Libby) and family (Joe and Libby’s daughter Lauryn E. Williams and husband Blake and their son Carter and daughter Kate of Charlotte, NC; and Joe and Libby’s son Nathan J. Mitchiner and wife Amy and their daughter Jaidyn). She is also survived by her sister Helen Parrish Tuttle of Clayton, NC, and her family; a sister-in-law Doris Mitchiner Matthews of Hixson, TN, and her family; and a sister-in-law Elise Williams Parrish of Charlotte, NC (formerly of Johnston County, NC), and her family. While raising her children, Gretchen was for many years a Girl Scout leader and active PTA member. She was a long-time Sunday School leader and member of various Bible Studies. She was a prayer warrior with a servant’s heart and avidly mission-minded, having as her personal highlight a two-week church mission trip to Kenya, Africa, when she was in her 70’s. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at 3:00 pm at Providence Baptist Church, 6339 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612, officiated by Leon Tucker, Pastor of Capital Community Church. Visitation, also at Providence, will immediately follow the service. Funeral arrangements are by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607, or to a mission of your choice.
