Guy Wilton Senter of Apex, NC passed away on January 4, 2014 at Morningside Assisted Living in Raleigh, NC at the age of 90 years and 5 days. Guy was born the second of three sons to Oscar Russell Senter and Lucy Lee Senter on December 30, 1923. Guy loved sports and being outside whether camping, traveling, playing golf or working at the farm. He was proud to be a Boy Scout and later in life was a Boy Scout leader at Forest Hills Baptist Church. Guy attended school in Raleigh and graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1942. He was active in sports at Broughton and excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and was selected for the Ambassador Award for Outstanding Athlete in Raleigh in 1942. Guy and his brothers, Russell “Buck” and John R. Senter, were quite a trio in sports at Broughton and part of a history of brothers who excelled in sports at Broughton. Duke University recruited Guy to play football and he was honored to be an usher as a high school senior at the 1942 Rose Bowl game held at Wallace Wade Stadium. WW II interrupted his college studies and he served in the US Army in Ft Hood, TX and later in the Philippines at the end of the war. While in the Philippines, he was assigned to help refurbish the golf course while supervising prisoners. Thus began his love of golf! He returned to Duke University and graduated in 1949. He was an avid Duke supporter and Iron Dukes member. In retirement, he rarely missed basketball and football games and attended many ACC basketball tournaments with his buddies or family. Even this year, he was able to attend all Duke home football games as he had for as many years as we can remember! Go Duke! Guy began his career with the Internal Revenue Service in 1950. He retired after 25 years as a Special Agent. In retirement, he was able to spend time working as an accountant, caring for his cows, land development and playing golf. Guy enjoyed attending Raleigh Sports Club meetings, Ole Raleigh Boys, Broughton Alumni and was a member of Bentwinds Country Club. Guy is survived by his wife of 63 years; Hellon Frances (Bray) Senter and their three children, Elisabeth “Betsy” Senter of Burke, SD; Lucy Senter Brickley (David) of Raleigh, NC; Guy Wilton Senter, Jr. (Patty) of Morehead City, NC.
