GARNER - Henderson Wendell Haire, 85, retired Garner Postmaster with 23 years of service with the US Postal Service, died Sunday at his home. A native of Creswell, NC, he was the son of the late James Edward and Pearley Woodley Haire. He was a veteran of World War II where he received a Purple Heart for his injury during the D-Day Invasion. A member of First Baptist Church of Garner where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon for many years as well as in other various capacities, he was also a member of the Garner Lions Club, Garner Masonic Lodge #701 and Amran Shrine Temple. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Garner.Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park with Military Honors. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathryn Laney Haire; sons, Terry Wendell Haire and wife, Barbara of Raleigh, Chris Edward Haire of Cary; brother, Leroy Haire of Creswell NC; grandchildren, Shannon Haire Wright and husband, Brian of Willow Spring, Jenna Haire Tarleton and husband, Drew of Raleigh; step-grandchildren, Kim Alford of Wilmington and Glenn Weaver of Raleigh; great-grandchildren Laken and London Wright, Dallas Alford IV and Baylor Tarleton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haire was preceded in death by sisters, Virginia Furlough, Agatha Phelps and Viva Curcio and brother, William Haire.The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner and at other times at the home.
