Harold Oliver Long, Jr., 86, of Raleigh passed away on September 17, 2021. Harold was born on November 12, 1934, at Rex Hospital, in Raleigh, to the late Harold Oliver, Sr. and Violet Mae Long, of Raleigh. Harold, Jr. graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1954, where he was a member of the golf and basketball team. He graduated from Elon University in 1958, with a degree in Business Administration. While at Elon, he was a member of Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity and the Elon golf team. During his high school and college years, he spent the summers working at Par Golf and the Raleigh Golf Association. Mr. Long served in the United States Army and United States Air Force Reserve for six years, after college. He took an active role in the communities he lived in by serving on various boards and was a member of the Raleigh Jaycees. Harold also enjoyed coaching basketball and soccer teams in city leagues. Mr. Long retired from Carolina Power & Light Company (now Duke Progress Energy), after 36 years of service as a staff accountant in Dunn, Wilmington, Morehead City and finally in Raleigh. In addition, he was the former co-owner and vice president of Capital Bumper Exchange, of Raleigh/Fayetteville, owner of One Hour Martinizing Dry Cleaners, in Raleigh, owner of the Center Grill, in downtown Raleigh, and owner of several rental properties, in Wilmington and Raleigh. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time working with his son at Longsland Realty and traveling throughout Europe, the Middle East, and the United States with his wife of 64 years, Joan Long. He was active in the lives of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed watching college sports, working in his yard, investing, and spending time with his cat, Blacky. Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Joan Barnett Long, of Raleigh, daughters, Sandra Long Jeffreys (Taylor), of Goldsboro, NC and Patricia Long Crawford (Tom), of Los Angeles, CA: son, Harold Oliver Long, III (Sherry), of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Morgan Jeffreys Parker (Alex), of Charlotte, Austin Jeffreys Baker (John), of Raleigh, Mason Oliver Long and Sawyer Wayne Long, both of Raleigh. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Joan Long and his sister, Sara Sue Smith. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at 11am, at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington St. Raleigh, NC 27603. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Mr. Long’s memory to Second Chance Pet Adoption, Inc, 6003 Chapel Hill Road, Suite 133, Raleigh, NC 27607.
