Harvey Edward Smith was born June 23rd, 1944 to Nellie Phoebe Chisenhall Smith and Clyde Harvey Smith of Durham, North Carolina. He trained as a carpenters helper working with his daddy. Over the years developed into a professional carpenter. He loved working on cars and eventually became a skilled automotive technician working for several auto dealerships in the Raleigh area. There was not much he couldnt do when it came to working with his hands and he was willing to help anyone who needed it and didnt wait to be asked. He just did what needed to be done and never expected anything in return. Harvey had a strong faith in God and faced his impending death with dignity and no fear. He loved everything about nature, fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing or just sitting on his front porch at home watching the hummingbirds come by. From 2012 until last year when ALS took away much of his ability to do the things he loved, he had his little slice of heaven at Surf City Family Campground on Topsail Island. There he developed a group of friends who loved and respected him and remained steadfast throughout his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Donna Faye Ferguson and Clydia May Allen, and his brother Jerry Wayne Smith. He is survived by his wife Judy Penny Smith of Garner, his daughter Terri Elliott and son-in-law Tony Elliott, his son Harvey (Eddie) Smith, Jr. of Durham, his step-daughter Katherine Adrianne Parker of Raleigh, the mother of his children Linda Lynam Smith Durham, his grandchildren Jessica Elliott of Baltimore, Maryland, Emily Elliott of Nashville, Tennessee, Steven and Dalton Smith of Durham, and three brothers Larry (Big Bo) Smith and Jason (Jay Boy) Smith of Durham, and Bobby D. Smith of Creedmoor. Donations to North Carolina ALS Association in memory of Harvey Edward Smith or Duke Home Care and Hospice.
