GARNER - Haynes William Rhodes Jr., 95, of Garner, NC, peacefully departed this life on January 20, 2022. He was born in Hemingway, SC on January 25, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents, Haynes William Rhodes and Ophelia Prevatt Rhodes; his sister Bessie Rhodes Pittman and her husband, James Silas Pittman; his step-siblings Lester Butler, Earl Butler, Thelma Butler, and Paul Butler; his nephew, James Wayne Pittman; his stepson, Terrence Wayne Cherry; and his first wife, Rachel Elizabeth Herring Rhodes. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Newell Cherry Rhodes; his sister-in-laws, Alice Herring Plenge (Fritz Plenge) and Nancy Berryman Herring; his sons, Michael Wingate Rhodes (Kathy Regester Rhodes) and Robert Stephen Rhodes (Donna Day Rhodes); his daughters, Susan Diane Wilson (Jeffrey Kight Wilson) and Sharon Elizabeth Rhodes; his stepson, Delmon Michael Cherry (Guilda Cherry); his step daughter, Janet Cherry; his grandchildren, Michael Wingate Rhodes, Jr., Stephen Jason Rhodes (Christopher League), Laura Heather Rhodes (Lauren Verbanic Rhodes), Melanie Dawn Word (Richard Lewis), Rachael Rhodes, Jeffrey Kight Wilson, Jr. (Torrie Nelson Wilson), and Jessica Diane Wilson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Haynes grew up in Fairmont, NC. He served in the Navy during World War II. Of note, he served aboard the USS Hill – Destroyer Escort # 141 in the European-African campaign. Upon discharge from the Navy, after a short stint with a local company, he began a long career as a cost engineering professional on the construction of multiple Carolina Power & Light power stations during the ‘50s through ‘70s, retiring from CP&L after 21 years. Upon retirement, Haynes immersed himself into genealogical study of his ancestry. He published four volumes and was in the process of a fifth volume before his passing. Haynes not only became an active member of The Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, he also traced the family ancestry to several patriot ancestors who served in the American Revolution. Above all, Haynes was a man of integrity with total devotion to his family. He will be greatly missed and always cherished in memory by his family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, January 27th at Bryan Lee Funeral Home in Garner. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 12:45 followed by the funeral at 1. Graveside services will be held Monday, January 31st, at noon.
