As a young adult, she was active in 4H, and was honored to be chosen as a delegate to the Chicago convention. After graduating from Garner High School, she earned a business degree from Campbell College. During the early years of her marriage, Hazel worked for the Wake County Extension Service. Later, she worked as an administrative assistant with the NC Division of Facility Services.
