Helen Slate Byrd

Nothing- Not even death- can separate us from the love of God. Helen Slate Byrd was born in Galax, Virginia on June 13, 1926 and passed away on August 9, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Lillie Hinson. She was married for 64 years to the late John B. Byrd, Jr.Helen had a sweet and loving personality that won the trust and hearts of many. Those who knew her were changed by her nurturing love and faith. She was a Christian who always put others before herself. When someone came into her home, they were always made to feel welcome. When she would go to see a friend, she never went empty handed. She will be missed by all that knew her.Helen enjoyed cooking for the holidays, traveling with her close friends, reading novels and passing them along, as well as family reunions in the mountains. She enjoyed simple things in life, like playing with her grandchildren and working in her rose garden. She is survived by her three children John Byrd, and wife Nancy; David Byrd and wife Charlotte; and daughter, Karen Betler; and four grandchildren Kim, Karen, Austin, and Bentley. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday August 13, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church 2100 Noble Road, Raleigh NC 27608.
