Hellon Bray Senter passed away on January 9, 2018 at the age of 92 ½ years old. She briefly lived at Magnolia Glen Assisted Living and prior to that she resided at Independence Village of Olde Raleigh. Hellon Frances Bray was born on July 21, 1925 the daughter of Herbert Thomas Bray and Mary Mims Bray and joined big sister Katherine Bray (Winters). Hellon graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1943 and followed her love of secretarial work graduating from Peace College in 1945. She worked as a legal secretary for E.H. Cannon. She also worked for the NC Bar Association and the NC General Assembly. On April 22, 1950, Hellon and Guy W. Senter were married in Raleigh, NC. They made their home in Raleigh and raised three children. Hellon was involved in working part time, when possible, while children were growing up. She helped with school projects, chauffeuring and Girl Scout cookies. She enjoyed spending time at the Flea Market or eating at K&W or Hudson Belk Cafeteria. Hellon was raised in the Presbyterian church and was a great student of biblical history. She attended Forest Hills Baptist Church with her family when possible. She was steady and devout in her faith. She loved her daily devotional book and found strength in the messages. Mom enjoyed playing cards particularly Bridge and Solitare. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and Jumble puzzles and these kept her mind sharp in her later years. We found that grandma and the grandkids enjoyed the card game “Golf”. This gave way to some marathon games and a little competition! She was also quick to be suspicious of any mischievous maneuvers and may even call on “cheaters”. She lived in her home past her 90th birthday. Her independent spirit, stubbornness and determination kept her going. As a child of the Depression Era, she was thrifty and organized. She enjoyed living in her home with the help of friends and neighbors. Hellon is survived by her children: Elisabeth “Betsy” Senter of Burke, SD; Lucy Senter Brickley (David) of Raleigh, NC; Guy Wilton Senter, Jr. (Patty) of Beaufort, NC; five grandchildren Angela Brickley, Arthur Brickley, Andrik Brickley, Chelsea Senter and Matthew Senter; niece Jane Winters of Wilmington, NC, and nephew Al Winters of Wilmington, NC. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Raleigh. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.
