Henry C. Mundy

GARNER–Henry Clifton Mundy, 79, founder of the Southside Shopper, passed away on Saturday. Born in Whittier, NC to the late Clifton Osborn Mundy and Mary Lola Adams Mundy, Henry was a graduate of Swain County High School where he played baseball. Henry served four years in the US Marine Corps and met the love of his life, Shirley Jean Lee of Pamlico County in 1958 married on Oct. 20, 1959. They had four beautiful children whom Henry loved with his every breath. Henry worked for the News and Observer before starting The Southside Shopper Newspaper. Henry built his garage business into a successful legacy for his family. He never met a stranger and was full of life and laughter. Henry loved to play golf and go to the beach, tell stories, play scrabble and visit family and friends. He was a member of the Garner Lions Club and Hayes Chapel Christian Church. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday at Hayes Chapel Christian Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park. Surviving: his wife of 56 years, Shirley Lee Mundy; daughters, Kim Mundy Byars and husband, Greg, Rhonda Mundy and Becky Mundy Cates and husband Paul; son, David W. Mundy and wife, Tiffany all of Garner; Grandchildren, Stephen Jeffries and wife, Rose, Justin Byars and wife, Ashley, Brandon Byars, April and Jordan Keen, Madison Mundy, Megan Mundy and Dalton Mundy, Great Grandchildren, Kinzley Jeffries and Brady Joyner; brother, Earl Eugene Mundy of Morehead City. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
