Herb R. Brown

August 4, 1938 — March 15, 2024

Herbert Randolph “Herb” Brown, 85, passed away on March 15, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Maryland, Herb was the son of the late Lewis Earl Brown and Ada May Behrens Brown. Herb joined the Air Force where he spent 4 years as a radar technician. After an honorable discharge Herb continued to work with radar and received a degree in Engineering Technology. He married Linda Golden in 1966 and enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Herb and Linda raised two children and were blessed with a wonderful church family and lifelong friends in Round Hill. Herb retired from the Federal Aviation Administration after 30 years of service.

Herb and Linda served together on a number of mission trips, including, Malawi, Africa, and Mississippi and Louisiana following Katrina. They loved the people of the Dominican Republic, where they served on numerous occasions. Herb served with the Georgia United Methodist volunteers in Missions many times over the years. Through Samaritan’s Purse he was able to help rebuild homes in North Carolina and New York and also helped to build several churches in Alaska.

Herb loved Holland’s Church and loved working the barbecue. He went on his Emmaus weekend while at Holland’s and cherished his weekly breakfasts with his Emmaus group. He also enjoyed meeting with his McDonald/Bojangles breakfast buddies daily for the last 20 years!  He was the most precious daddy you can imagine and loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday the 27th from 1-2 p.m. with the Funeral at 2 o’clock at Holland’s Church, 9433 Ten Ten Road, Raleigh, NC 27603. Burial will follow at Holland’s Church Cemetery.

Herb is survived by his daughter, Julie Soderlund and husband, Kevin; son, Mark Brown and wife, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Katelyn (Randy) and Jeffrey, Emily, Luke, Eliana, and Aliya; and great grandchildren, Wylder, Ezekiel, and Emma.

In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his beloved wife Linda Brown and his brother, Lawrence “Larry” Knox.

In honor of his love for missions, the family asks that in lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000 Boone, NC 28607 or to Appalachian Service Project c/o Holland’s Church, 9433 Ten Ten Road Raleigh, NC 27603. Thank you!
