RALEIGH – Homer Lee Powell passed away Monday at his home of more than 55 years in the Swift Creek community outside Raleigh. A native of Fuquay, he was a professional truck driver for over forty years and Vice-President of Triangle Express for more than 25 years. He was an active member of Athens Drive Baptist Church for more than 50 years and served as a deacon and Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. He is survived by his wife of more than 67 years, Barbara Christmas Powell; a son, Ron Powell and wife, Cathy; a daughter, Sharon McLaurin and husband, Rev. David; grandchildren, Shannon Powell and wife, Melissa, Bethany Walker and husband, Bert, Landon Powell and wife, Allyson, Rebekah Moore and husband, James, Liz Wilson and husband Ernie, Hannah Melton and husband, Robbie; 10 great-grandchildren and a brother, Shirlowe Powell. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Flossie Powell; 11 brothers and sisters and a great-granddaughter, Izzy Powell. The family will accept visitors Thursday at Athens Drive Baptist Church from 10:00 until 11:30 am. A funeral service will follow at 12:00. Burial will be at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Athens Drive Baptist Church Building Fund, 1601 Athens Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606.
