Howard Murray Wethington

April 22, 1924 — December 31, 2022

Howard M. Wethington, April 22,1924 – December 31, 2022, of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully, following a brief illness. He was 98 years old. He was born in Eureka, NC to Ben and Elizabeth Wethington., the youngest of 8 children. He was a WWII veteran, a loving husband for 73 years and a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Howard was a long time member of Longview Baptist Church and later, Tabernacle Baptist Church. He will be remembered as a master gardener, always having a large vegetable garden and beautiful yard, and as a lifelong sports fan. He spent many hours watching Enloe High School sports, especially baseball, and was a lifelong fan of NC State, the Atlanta Braves, and the Dallas Cowboys. He had a special place in his heart for children, always carrying candy in his pockets to share. Many hours were spent playing and being silly with his daughters and later his grandchildren. He had the heart of a helper as well, always volunteering to help paint, do yard work and pet sit for the “grand pets.” His kindness and sense of humor were always appreciated by all who knew him.


He is survived by his daughters, Susan W. Hoye (Jim) and Nancy W. Wells (John), six grandchildren, Michael Hoye (Janssel), Jon Hoye (Joann), and Mary Beth Laws (Buddy), Lauren Hines (Josh), Kristen DeCain (Drew) and John Wells, Jr. (Caeley Setta), and 6 great-grandchildren, Harlan, Alice and Thomas Laws, Joseph Hoye, and Natalie and Parker Hines. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Robert Bedford, sister-in-law, Shirley Bedford and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice, and 7 siblings.


A funeral service will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 8304 Leesville Rd, Raleigh, on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am at the church prior to the funeral. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Salvation Army, or Raleigh Rescue Mission.
