James Curtis Hall

March 6, 1925 — December 31, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. - J. Curtis Hall, age 93, died Monday, December 31, 2018. Born in Glade Spring, VA, to the late L.S. Hall and Bettie Cox Hall, he was raised in Garner, NC. He lived in Grenada MS from 1970-1993, where he served as president and general manager of Hall Trucking Company. In the late 1950s and 1960s, he founded and ran two successful restaurants, Piggy Park and Kwix Drive-In on Capital Blvd. in Raleigh. Earlier in his career, he was employed by the N.C. State University business office and he remained a lifelong Wolfpack fan. Curtis was a 1943 graduate of the Old Garner High School, a varsity basketball player during his junior and senior years, and team “Captain” in his final year. Upon graduation he enrolled in the U.S. Merchant Marines and saw active duty service during WWII in the Atlantic, Middle East, Mediterranean, and Pacific War Zones. He was serving on a warship in the Pacific waiting to invade Japan at the time of the surrender in 1945. Curtis was an active member of Methodist Churches during residences in Raleigh, Grenada, MS, and Myrtle Beach, SC. He and his late wife, Joyce Matthews Hall, were avid dancers and golfers. Curtis also held a private pilots license with instrument rating. Survivors include his daughter, Janet Marie Hall, and son-in-law Jim Campbell, of Chevy Chase, MD; sons, James Grey Hall of Raleigh, NC and Robert Stanley Hall and wife, Terri of Oxford, MS; sister, Alice Hall Williams of Garner; brother, William A. Hall of Nashville, TN; 4 granddaughters, 5 great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Matthews Hall; and brothers, Stanley W. Hall, Hal D. Hall and R.N. Hall. The family will receive friends at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner on Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 2:00-3:00 pm with a funeral to be held at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Online condolences may be made at www.bryan-leefuneralhome.com.
