James Franklin Thornton

GARNER - James Franklin Thornton, 85, died Tuesday, March 8, 2022 in Garner, NC with family by his side. He was born on May 11, 1936 in Sampson County to Royal and Nancy “Thelma” Thornton. James loved farming and going fishing with his siblings at Warren’s Mill Pond. James helped tend the family farm and left for the Army when he was 18 years old. He served two years and then returned home. Soon thereafter he met his future wife. James married Kathryn “Kay” McKeithan on November 21, 1964. They resided in Garner and were blessed with two children: Danny and Wanda. James worked as a Law Enforcement Officer at Doretha Dix Hospital throughout his career. He enjoyed the companionship and being able to serve the Dix Community. He also worked at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds as an Assistant Chief of Public Safety. He made many lifelong friends throughout this time. James was often seen serving the Garner Community with the Garner Optimist and loved making Popcorn for the Youth Basketball players, selling trees at Christmas and cooking for the Annual BBQ fundraiser. He enjoyed working outside in his yearly garden and tending to his yard. James is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kay” Thornton, children: Danny (Debbie) Thornton and Wanda Thornton; Granddaughter: Jayme (Matt) Bustamante and Great Granddaughter: Peyton Bustamante. HIs surviving siblings are Shirley Sinclair, Evelyn Bridges and Larry Thornton. He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Royal and Thelma Thornton and Siblings: Glenn Thornton, Allen Thornton, JL Thornton and Jimmy Thornton. Visitation is Friday, March 11, 2022 from 11:00a-1:00p at James’ Home. Graveside Service for Family and Friends will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh at 3p inside of the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.
