James Kenneth Johnson

October 27, 1935 — August 3, 2023

GARNER– James Kenneth Johnson, 87, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2023, at BellaRose Nursing Home. A native of Johnston County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late James Willard Johnson and Lerah Stanley Johnson. Kenneth was a loving husband and father, devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, and friend.


After honorably serving his country as a member of the United States Army from 1954 to 1957, Kenneth married Faye Best and moved to Dunn, where he and Faye raised their daughters, Mona and Lynne. He was an active member of North Clinton Avenue Baptist Church, serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board, and was employed by Carolina Telephone / Sprint for over 40 years. For the past 25 years, Kenneth had lived in Garner with his wife, Barbara. He was a longtime member of Vandora Springs Church, where he had also served as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He had been an active member of the American Legion and VFW and was a Mason.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his cherished wife of over 38 years, Faye Best Johnson, and his much-loved older brother, Dwight Hampton Johnson.


Kenneth is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Wallace Johnson; loving daughters, Mona Johnson Hudson and Lynne Johnson Lockard (Thomas); grandchildren, Lauren Westin, (Adam), Caroline Lockard, and Andrew Lockard; great-grandchildren, Anabel, Callum, and Vivien Westin; stepchildren, Tony Byrd, Kim Jackson, and Keith Byrd; 5 step-grandchildren, and 11 step-great-grandchildren.


A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 09, 2023, at Vandora Springs Church, 1521 Vandora Springs Rd, Garner, NC 27529. A private family burial will follow at Town of Four Oaks Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a period of visitation from 10:00 am -10:45 am, on Wednesday, August 09, 2023, at Vandora Springs Church.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, 450 West Dr, Chapel Hill, NC 27599.
