James Raymond (Ray) Cardin, 89, passed away January 21, 2016 in Raleigh, NC. Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Ray was proudly born in Pawtucket, RI and was the youngest son of the late Margaret McHugh and Paul Cardin. Ray was a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the University of Rhode Island and participated in the Naval Flight Officers Training program during WWII. Ray also studied at UNC Chapel Hill, Wesleyan University in CT and Floyd Bennett Field in NY. Ray worked as a licensed Mechanical Engineer for FRAM Oil Filter Company in Jacksonville, Florida and Richmond, VA and was later recruited to the Westinghouse “Plant Apparatus Department” (PAD) in Pittsburgh, PA. At PAD, Ray contributed to the development of the US nuclear submarine program working closely with US Navy Admiral Hyman G. Rickover. He ended his engineering career as an Executive Manager of Quality Control with DeLaval Corporation, Florence, NJ. Ray retired to Youngsville, NC in 2005, where he enjoyed substitute teaching in Franklin and Wake counties. He was an avid reader, superb crossword puzzler, an active learner and shared his love of life and learning with others. Ray had a tremendous love for the ocean and dogs, especially his dogs Toby and Tiger. Ray was a member of the Lyons Club in Pennington, NJ and a Eucharistic Adoration minister and communicant at St Catherine of Sienna Church, Wake Forrest, NC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Marion Irene Cardin Gorse, brother Paul Joseph Cardin, wife Lilian Winifred Parillo and daughter Carol Ray Cardin. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Irene Monica Cardin of Youngsville, NC, son Raymond and his wife Kim of Raleigh, NC, son Andrew and Kristin of Cary, NC, daughter Barbara of Monroe, NJ, grandsons David of Hayward, CA, Ryan of Monmouth Junction, NJ, granddaughter Alexandria of Raleigh, NC and many loving nieces and nephews in RI and MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Youngsville EMS and Rescue (919-556-1061) or the Youngsville Fire Department (919-556-6899)
