Janice Woodell Horton, age 87, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 17, 2025, in Raleigh, NC. Born April 5, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Jarvis A. and Pearl Beasley Woodell.

In addition to her parents, Janice was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Joseph Horton; daughter, Susan Broadwell Prior; and granddaughter, Christyn Alaina Stephenson.

Janice, known as Mamaw to all the ones she loved, was a hardworking, caring and giving woman. She showed love for her family in many different ways, but one of the biggest ways was through her baking. Her special recipes for peanut butter fudge, banana nut bread, banana pudding, and all kinds of cakes and candies made her grandchildren feel like they were celebrating the holidays year-round. In addition to working for Westinghouse (later ABB) for over 30 years and for Rex Hospital for 20 years, she sold these baked goods around Thanksgiving and Christmas to raise money for gifts for her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved working with her friends at the Methodist Church. She was known for her outgoing personality and loved and respected by all her co-workers. She would love to talk to you about Jeff Gordon and show you her favorite NASCAR memorabilia. She also never missed an episode of "The Bold and the Beautiful". She always kept her house neat and beautiful on the inside and out. She loved tending to and taking care of her flowers, and it showed when you looked at her front yard. Walking into her house, you instantly felt a cozy and welcoming presence. The main room is the first room you walk by when entering her home, and every time you look at that room, you think of her and all her family members sitting, eating and laughing. It was truly a wonderful talent that she had for creating such beautiful holiday get togethers for our family. The lasting and comforting memories of each and every room in her home will bring a smile to her children, grandchildren and other relatives alike for many years to come. She truly defined, turning a house, into a home.
