Jewel Poole Mangum

September 4, 1931 — September 28, 2024

Jewel Poole Mangum, 93, passed away Saturday surrounded by her loving family. A native of Wake County, she is the daughter of the late Mortimer and Myrtle Bagwell Poole.

Jewel spent her early years working on her family’s vegetable farm. She loved plants, flowers, and gardening. Jewel and her husband, Royelle, enjoyed many years square dancing with the Dixie Twirlers. She was well known in her family for her wide range of knowledge and her ability to provide the answer to any question.

Above all else, Jewel valued her faith and her family. She grew up attending Ebenezer Methodist Church and later attended New Bethel Baptist Church. Most recently, she was a long-time member of Highland Baptist Church where she was known by many as someone who radiates God’s love and kindness. Jewel was confident in her identity as a child of God, and it brought her joy to see friends and family find Salvation.

Affectionately known to many as Granny, Jewel was generous, hospitable, and selfless. Her home had an open door and was a place of comfort and wonderful memories for her children and grandchildren. Granny regularly provided Sunday lunch for her extended family, cooking for a large crowd. She was famous for her old-fashioned chocolate cakes, squishy apples, and fresh vegetables. Her great grandchildren knew Granny would lovingly share M&M’S, Cow Tales, and hugs. She made everyone she encountered feel seen and important.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at Highland Baptist Church, Raleigh. Burial will follow at the Bagwell Family Cemetery, 5898 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, NC 27610.
