Joanne Melinda Holland Grimes

ANGIER – Joanne Melinda Holland Grimes, 83 years old, passed away on Friday, August 19th after a brief illness. She was born in Johnston County on November 8,1938 to Aline Malinda Love Holland and Ira Maytlon Holland. A 1957 graduate of Angier High School and Hank Hanna’s School of Cosmetology, she owned and operated a beauty shop in Angier for many years. She also owned and operated a drapery business for several years making window treatments for many homes in Angier and the surrounding areas. In 1993, she joined the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Family, working as a receptionist. As her record shows, she had a passion for pleasing people. She had many hobbies during her lifetime: reading, cross-stitching, going to yard sales and auctions, and in her later years, she picked up coloring, again. A faithful member of Plainview Presbyterian Church, she held many positions in the church, including young teens Sunday School leader, adult Sunday School leader, Moderator of the Women’s Circle, and ruling Elder. She was active in the Friends of the Library serving as treasurer since its reorganization in 1994. Surviving are her daughter, Melynda Grimes Crouse and husband, Michael; grandson, Noah Robert Grimes Baker; granddaughter, Sydney Malynda Baker; step-grandson, Ben Crouse; sister, Vickie Holland Hillman and husband, Richard; niece, Anita Love Mills; great-niece, Victoria Alena Avery; great-nephew, Jimmy Dalton Avery; great-great-niece, McKayla Love Gardner; and several other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Donald “Donnie” Ray Grimes, Sr.; her son, Donald “Don” Ray Grimes, Jr. at age 11 in 1970; nephew, Doyle Mills; step-father, James Judd Barbour; step-sister, Mae Williams; step-brothers, George Halford, James Alford, and Sherwood Barbour. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at 3:00 PM at Plainview Presbyterian Church, Angier. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.
