John D. Mccrory

November 27, 1942 — April 9, 2017

RALEIGH – John Douglas McCrory, 74, died April 9, 2017. He leaves his wife, Rosellen Cook McCrory; their daughter, Jennifer McCrory Fontes of Raleigh; their son, Michael Douglas McCrory and wife Sherri of Springfield, WV; their granddaughter, Aidan Ansel McCrory; and their grandson, Matthew McCrory Fontes. John was born near Frisco City, AL, the son of the Rev. Ollie McCrory and Rosa Parmer McCrory. He is survived by his sister, Gloria Erline McClure and husband George of Cantonment, FL; and his sisters-in-law, Pennie McCrory of Mauldin, SC; and Muriel McCrory of Pensacola, FL. He was predeceased by his brothers, Howard McCrory of Frisco City, AL; O’Neil McCrory of Mauldin, SC; and Joel McCrory of Pensacola, FL; as well as his sister, Dr. Nellie McCrory of Gastonia, NC; and several nieces and nephews. He retired in 2002 as Executive Vice President and General Auditor of BB&T in Wilson, NC, where he worked for 30 years. John was an honors graduate of the Florida State University School of Business. He was also a graduate of banking programs at the University of Wisconsin and Louisiana State University, as well as The Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He had multiple certifications in his career field. A leader in internal auditing, he served for a number of years in elected positions with the Institute of Internal Auditors. John loved travel with his wife and family, going to many places in the US and overseas. He particularly loved Ireland, the land of his ancestry, and visited there several times. He liked researching the history of his and others’ families, often doing genealogy projects for friends. His keen intellect and insatiable curiosity about the world led him to read and study in many areas. He also loved dogs, especially Susan, the yellow Lab with whom he shared many years. His passion was golf. John said that his game was more enthusiastic than effective, but he loved being on the golf course, first at Willow Springs Country Club in Wilson and later at Wildwood Green Golf Club in Raleigh, where he served as President of the Senior Men’s Group. He enjoyed studying all aspects of the game of golf, with his greatest interest in golf architecture. John made it a priority to learn the history of various courses and to play them during his travels. A Celebration of Life will be observed at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, where the family will receive friends from 1:00PM - 2:15PM prior to the service.
