John F. McCarty, 83, passed away on December 26, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born January 16, 1941, in Bethlehem, PA, he was the son of the late Margaret (Nolan) and John Francis McCarty.
John grew up in Bethlehem, PA, and was the proud graduate of Bethlehem Catholic High School, Class of 1958. After graduation he worked at Western Electric and attended Moravian College earning his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He went on to attain his Master of Science in Business Economics from Lehigh University in 1964.
In 1961 John married the love of his life, Amelia (Millie) McCarty, née Schwartz. Together they raised five children. He is survived by his wife and children: John and his wife Joan, Timothy and his wife Betty, Peter and his wife Yunhee, Annie and her husband Kevin Collins and Mary Ellen and her husband Jeremy Leipzig. He had 14 grandchildren: Alma, John, Grace, Suki, Piper, Owen, Agnes, Kevin, Erin, Liam, Henry, Ava, Milly and Margaret. He is also survived by his brother, Francis McCarty, of Bethlehem, PA.
John had a 35 year career with IBM. At 27, he was awarded IBM's Outstanding Contribution Award and was most proud of his work as a product management executive at IBM's Large Systems Division which was key to IBM's success in the 70s and 80s. He worked at IBM locations in Armonk NY, Poughkeepsie NY, Endicott NY, Boulder CO, and finally in Raleigh. In Raleigh, he transitioned to IBM's Networking Division where he consulted with many customers conducting strategic planning workshops until his retirement in 1999.
John was a voracious reader and loved the game of golf. His hole in one at Raleigh Country Club was witnessed by his daughter Mary Ellen. He lived in and loved his home in Raleigh from 1984 to the day of his passing. He enjoyed gardening and planted many Azaleas which over time produced a beautiful springtime display. He was an avid fan of college football and basketball, especially the NC State Wolfpack. He followed Lehigh wrestling for many years and often attended the Easterns tournament.
John loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren at the beach each summer. From Stone Harbor, NJ in the 70s and 80s to Emerald Isle and Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina starting in the 90s. John was a member and usher at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. He was a member of Wake County's Ancient Order of Hibernians, and volunteered for several charities. John was a generous man in many ways.
Millie was his rock, who, from the day they met, was drawn to his blue eyes.
He will be greatly missed.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 31st at 3:00 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh.
