John Douglas Johnson, known as Doug Johnson to the community, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 19, 2025, at Moore Regional Hospital. He was the age of 86. Doug was a loving father, grandfather, and a dear friend to many. He had the ability to light up a room with his upbeat attitude, encouraging words, wit, and humor. During his life, he was known for his love of poetry, spontaneous toasts, swimming, checkers, and card games. His favorite was the card game Canasta. He was also an active member of the Parkton Ruritan club.
Born to John Ellis Johnson and Gorria E. Bibey in Vass, North Carolina, Doug grew up on a family farm. Here, he would develop a strong work ethic that would take him far in life. After finishing school, Doug later joined the United States Air Force. He would serve his country for several years before starting his successful landscaping business in Southern Pines, North Carolina. This is where he would devote himself for the remainder of his life.
Doug is remembered by his family as being a caring and loving father to his two "darling" daughters, and a fun, humorous, and caring grandfather to his two grandchildren. Doug cherished the time he spent with his family. His presence during the holidays, at family gatherings, and celebrations were always a delight. Whenever he entered the room, Doug would bring with him feelings of warmth and joy to those around him.
He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Johnson West and husband Kenneth West, of Garner, North Carolina and Catherine Johnson of Wilson, North Carolina. His two grandchildren, Rebecca West of Garner, North Carolina, and Mark West of Garner, North Carolina. He is also survived by his former wife, Jane Canady Johnson of Parkton, North Carolina.
At a later date, the family will have a private gathering to honor and celebrate his life. Doug will be greatly missed by his family and friends. May his memory live on in our hearts until we are each able to meet him again.
