July 23, 1924 - July 23, 2011 RALEIGH, NC. John Lloyd Castleberry, Jr. died peacefully Saturday, his birthday, at the age of 87. He was the son of the late J. Lloyd & Esther Mitchell Castleberry, and grandson of William F. Castleberry, all of Apex. N.C. John was a registered Professional Engineer & Surveyor. He received his BS degree from NC State in 1948 and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. His practice included surveying, engineering and architecture. Along with former classmate from N C State, Herndon Edgerton, John formed a consulting engineering firm, Castleberry-Edgerton Co. Their respected practice included the design and supervision of well known projects in NC and VA including University Mall, North Hills Mall, Ridgewood Shopping Center and Parkwood Mall. John retired in 1992 after 37 years in the industry. John was the original engineer and surveyor for the land acquisition, later to be known as the Research Triangle. After years of secrecy, planning and land assemblage, over 90 separate tracts involving 7,000 acres were eventually acquired all of which was surveyed and mapped by Castleberry. His interest in historic preservation led to an appointment to the Raleigh Historic District Commission where he served as Chairman for several years. During that tenure, he jointly helped in the preparation of Design Guidelines for Raleigh Historic Districts which is still in use by The City of Raleigh. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and took every opportunity during retirement to proudly cheer for his four grandchildren in their many sporting events. He was a committed member of Longview United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served as Sunday School teacher, worked in the food pantry and wherever else needed. He was a respected member of the Raleigh Toastmasters Club into his eighties. One of his most passionate hobbies was learning more about his family history and genealogy. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margie Raynor Castleberry; three sons, Steven Lloyd Castleberry, of Raleigh, John David Castleberry and wife, Mary, of Pilot, NC and Jeffrey Parker Castleberry and wife Suzanne, of Raleigh; four grandchildren David Michael, John Anthony, Cameron Hardy & Jeffrey Parker, Jr.; and his niece and nephews. His sister, Margaret, who predeceased him, was the wife of Dr. A. N. Johnson of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Chapel, Raleigh. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 - 1:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home prior to the service. Although flowers will be accepted and appreciated, donations may be made in Johns honor to Spoken Word Ministries, 205 West John Street, Mount Olive, NC.
