GARNER - John Spencer Riddle, 96, a retired engineer with Seaboard Coastline Railroad with 40 years of service, went home to be with his Lord Thursday. A native of Wake Co., he was the son of the late William Arthur and Frances Brown Riddle. After graduating from Needham Broughton High School, where he was a star football player, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served during World War II. He was an avid outdoorsman-hunting, fishing and golfing. He and Carrie belonged to a square dancing club where they traveled around loving every minute of it. Most important, he loved his Lord and his family - especially his wife Carrie. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Carrie Nobling Riddle; sons, Charles C. Bailey and wife Sheila of Garner and James R. Bailey and wife, Jane, of Raleigh; a brother, James Riddle of Cary; 3 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great grandson, Gavin Lee Bailey; brothers, W. A., Jr., Ernest, Marion, Julian, Joseph and Thomas Riddle and sisters, Katherine R. Poole and Frances R. Loveless. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00-5:00 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
