BENSON- John Nels Swanson, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 17. John was born in Fairmont MN on March 20, 1938 to Carl and Marie Swanson. John proudly served his country in the United State Marine Corps, 1958-1961, stationed in California, Korea and Okinawa. He worked as a computer networking systems engineer with Control Data, primarily based in Minneapolis but with extended assignments in Europe, New York, and NASA in Houston, Texas. In 1987 he began work with Storage Tech, relocating permanently to North Carolina. He was an active member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Garner, NC, and was involved in many volunteer activities at the church and Kure Beach Camp Agape. John was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Carla and Helen. John is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca Cowles Swanson; son, Eric John Swanson and wife, Shana; two daughters, Kristin Swanson Dutcher and Sarah Swanson Weisenburn and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Rachel Dutcher, Nicholas Dutcher, Rakel Swanson and Rebecca Skoller; brother, Jerry Berdell and wife, Lola; brother in law, Daniel Cowles; sisters in law, Deborah Cowles and Esther Cowles Schaeffer and husband, Andrew, and numerous nieces and nephews. John’s family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff of Rex UNC Health Care Hematology Oncology Associates, Garner NC, for their loving care of John throughout his illness. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church with burial following in the church’s Love Garden. The family will reicieve friends form 10:00-11:00 prior to the service. A reception will he held after the service.
