Raleigh - John Thomas Caldwell, 88, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2018 after a brief illness. John was born on November 11th, 1929 in Davidson, North Carolina. In 1953, he graduated from the newly created North Carolina State University School of Design, and was a member of the very first class to complete the new five-year professional course of study in Architecture. He also attended graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. He returned to Raleigh in the summer of 1954 to work on an architecture project and met Ann Marie Camlin. John and Ann were married in 1955. They were married for 63 years. In 1956, John reported for active duty to Rome, New York as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. John and Ann lived there for 2 years. He then left active duty and joined the US Air Force Reserves where he served for 30 years and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1989. The family returned to West Raleigh in 1958 where they have lived for 60 years. He was an architect and partner with Holloway-Reeves, and served for many years on both the State and National AIA Healthcare Committees. His specialty was medical buildings, both new construction and renovations. Among his projects were the Brodie School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and Wake Memorial Hospital. John and Ann enjoyed travelling, especially international destinations. They have lived in the Springmoor Life Care Community for the past 7 years. John is survived by his wife, Ann Camlin Caldwell, and his three children, Richard Caldwell and wife Kim; Susan Caldwell Hartley and husband John; and Rebecca Caldwell; sister, Mary Agnes Youchoff and husband John; brother Macfie Anderson Caldwell and wife Susie. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Laura Hartley Murray(Parker), Lucas Caldwell, Tyler Caldwell, Sean Mahoney and Conor Mahoney as well as two nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Kincaid Caldwell, brother William Harry Caldwell; and parents Gorden Anderson Caldwell and Harry Sloan Caldwell. A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 22nd at 2:00 pm in the auditorium at Springmoor Life Care Community, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff and residents of the Springmoor Life Care Community where Mr. Caldwell was welcomed and received excellent care.
