Joseph Anthony Barry

November 23, 1924 — October 1, 2016

Joe Barry of Trenton, NJ, Ocean Isle Beach, NC and Cary, NC passed away at his home in the care of his family and “Angel” caregivers Ribka Alemayehu and Aschu Semu. The “DASH” between Joe’s birth and death dates was a life of integrity, love, caring, involvement and community service.  There are so many stories to recount, so many memories to be cherished and so many people who will warmly recall his debonair style, warmth, humor, humming and banter. Joe attended LaSalle High School, Philadelphia and Rider University, Lawrence Township, NJ.  He owned and managed Kel Tren Service, Inc. in Trenton, NJ. Joe proudly served in the US Navy 1943 to 1946 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. As an original crewmember, Joe was a Plank holder participating in the ships’ return to Manhattan Harbor Pier 86 in October 2008. Joe is featured in the Intrepid Museum’s Oral History Project. The project is an initiative launched in 2013 to record and preserve the stories of those who served on the Intrepid, offering visitors the chance to hear the experiences of veterans in their own words and to learn history firsthand. Joe married Marie Calu October 5, 1946 and began his next great adventure as husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, businessman, bowler, golfer, tennis player, builder, globetrotter, Rotarian.  A devout Catholic all of his life, Joe led many parish activities including annual retreats to San Alfonso Retreat House and served as an officer for Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He participated in numerous church building campaigns in both New Jersey and North Carolina. Joe delivered Meals on Wheels throughout his years in Brunswick County, NC. Joe was most proud of his large and cherished family, never missing an opportunity to brag a little about all of them. Joe is survived by: His children: JoAnne Kelley (Tim White), Marie Durchuck, Joseph (Gabrielle) Barry, John Barry (Dale East), Michael (Carol) Barry and Thomas (Pamela) Barry. His grandchildren: Lisa Kelley, Paul (Shirin) Kelley, Kristine (Taylor) Vick, Paul (Jean Anne) Durchuck, Stephen (Jacky) Barry, Michelle Barry, Melissa Barry, Stephanie Barry, Brian Barry, David Barry, Brett (fiancé Demetria Michailides) Barry, Sean Barry and Jenna Barry. Great grandchildren: Giacomo Kelley, Stella Rose Kelley, Julian Kelley, Shane Kelley, Katie Vick, Michael Vick, Emmie Vick, Lukas Barry Durchuck, Anna Marie Durchuck, Evan Barry and Boden Barry. Joe will be also be remembered fondly by his numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Joe was pre-deceased by his Wife of 65 years, Marie, his Parents Gerald and Mary Manion Barry, Step Mother Clara, Siblings Mary Hughston, Gerald Barry, Vera McKeever, Jeanne Barry, Thomas Barry and Anne Haines. A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at Waltonwood, Cary on Monday October 3 at 3:30 PM.  Mass and Internment at St. Brendan the Navigator, Shallotte NC on October 7 and a Family Reunion in his honor at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the Intrepid Museum’s Oral History Project http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/OralHistoryProject.
