Joseph "Ned" Godwin

RALEIGH - Joseph "Ned" Godwin, 80, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025. He was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, on April 18, 1944, and was the son of the late Joseph Rufus Godwin and Mildred Johnson Inscoe.

In addition to his parents, Ned is preceded in death by his brother, James Oliver Godwin.

Ned was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather. He honorably served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from October 8, 1962, to December 20, 1966. On November 13, 1964, he married the love of his life and best friend, Peggy Godwin, whom he started dating when he was only 16 and married at age 20. Ned and Peggy spent 60 memorable years together as husband and wife. Together they raised two children whom Ned loved very dearly. He will be remembered fondly by his family and friends as a man of great strength and determination.

Ned is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Godwin of Raleigh; daughter, "Lori" Nina G. Ausley (Warren) of Clayton; son, Joseph "Ned" Godwin, Jr. (Christy) of Concord; and grandchildren, Matthew C. Smith, Amber N. Ausley, Brendan A. Godwin, and Abbey M. Godwin.

Attending church with Peggy on August 3, 2014, Ned responded to the invitational hymn, asked the Lord to be his Savior and requested to be baptized. His baptism was performed on October 5, 2014 in front of his wife, children and church family at Calvary Raleigh.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road. Burial will follow after the service at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, 12830 US 70 Business HWY W, Clayton, NC 27520. The family will receive friends for a period of visitation from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home.
