Joyce Hill Barefoot

d. May 22, 2013

RALEIGH- Longtime Raleigh resident and local restaurateur Joyce Hill Barefoot, 60, lost her battle with cancer much too young on May 22, 2013. She and her husband Gale Barefoot have owned and operated The Peddler Steak House for the last 44 years where she has welcomed millions of patrons with a warm smile and a sweet southern greeting. It was with this warmth that Joyce also opened her home to all those who needed a place to stay and to all children who needed a place to play. Joyce excelled at many things, but the three arts she mastered most in life required a spoon for cooking, a shovel for gardening, and an enormous heart for loving her friends and family. Her meals attracted those loved ones to her table while her extraordinary garden attracted an abundance of wildlife. Her approach toward life was simple. She lived life with such passion and loved so deeply that everyone in her life felt like the most important person in her world. She was everyones best friend or second mother. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on May 31, 2013 at St. Pauls Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC. Immediately following, family will receive friends at JC Raulston Arboretum, 4415 Beryl Road, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Pauls Christian Church or Hospice of Wake County. Joyce is preceded in death by her parents Robert Garland and Doris Hill. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Gale Barefoot, daughters Julie and Emily Barefoot, son-in-laws Jason Blevins and Ernie Hain, sister Doris Ann Cannady, brother-in-law Jim Cannady, and numerous loving friends and family. Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC
