Judith Carol Powell

Dr. Judith C. Powell, 73, was born on May 7, 1949, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and passed away on April 17, 2023 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was the eldest daughter of the late Louise Harper and Fred Bouch Powell.

Judith received a BS in Chemistry from Furman University, graduating magna cum laude. She later pursued her PhD in clinical psychology at Bowling Green University, and began her career in Raleigh, North Carolina where she practiced as a psychologist for over 40 years.

Judith had a love and fascination for all animals and the beauty of the great outdoors. Always enjoying a good joke, she had a quick and clever sense of humor. She also enjoyed windsurfing and flying kites on the beaches of North Carolina. Judith adored her miniature horse, Gloria, and showed her at many State Fairs and competitions. Gloria’s many show ribbons were scattered throughout the home on Wycliff Road. Being quite a movie buff, she had an eclectic library of movies that numbered in the hundreds. And last but certainly not least, Judith was an accomplished Origamist, attending and teaching at the National Convention for Oragami in NYC for several years.

Having love, compassion and a desire to help others, Judith was glad to lend an ear to someone in need. An active volunteer in her community, she held the position of secretary for the NC Psychological Association, served as a board member of SAGE and was active in several other non-profit organizations.

She is survived by three sisters, Sandy Parks (Joe) and Melissa Michener, both of Raleigh, NC, and Lydia Wingard, of Columbia, SC. Also surviving are a niece, Katie Wingard, of Boston, MA and two nephews, Samuel Parks of Raleigh and Daniel Wingard of Columbia, SC.

A celebration of Judith’s life will be held on Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 am at Bryan Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd, Raleigh, NC. Guests will be invited to share their favorite memory of Judith. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign or the local chapter of SAGE.
