Kay B. Daughtry

November 29, 1923 — June 19, 2015

GARNER- Kay Best Daughtry, 91, died Friday, June 19, 2015, at The Laurels of Forest Glenn.  Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Ed Exum Best and Mabel Carraway Best.  She was the administrative assistant to Governor James B. Hunt from 1976 – 84 and public communications assistant, NC Public Instructions, 1985 – 87.  Mrs. Daughtry was the first woman elected Alderman to Town of Garner, 1957 –59 and 1976 -80.  She was president of the Wake County Democratic Women of NC, 1972 - 73; secretary, NC Democratic Party, 1973 –74; president, Democratic Women of NC, 1987-90; delegate, National Convention, 1988.  A very active member in the Garner United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted; also a member of the Garner Women’s Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Willa Bower Daughtry of Garner; grandsons, David Daughtry, Jr., Kevin Daughtry and wife LeAnne; 2 great grandchildren; brother, Dr. Ed and Dr. Jenny Best of Athens, GA. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin R. Daughtry, a son, Michael E. Daughtry and a sister, Phillippa Darush. A private memorial graveside service will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
