Angier- Larry Cecil Surles, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born June 5, 1941 in Johnston County to the late Estelle and Roscoe Surles.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Surles Mangum; brothers-in-law, Ben Price, and Larry Mangum; stepbrother, Bobby Partin.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth S. Surles; daughter, Jennifer Surles Battle; son, Gary C. Surles; grandson, Cody Battle; sisters, Faye S. Price, and Brenda S. Hockaday (Jerry); brothers, Robert Surles (Reecie) and Billy Surles (Joyce) and several nieces and nephews.
Larry served honorably in the US Army and was a proud veteran. He worked for 30 plus years at Murray Supply in Raleigh with long time friend and co-worker, David Byrd. Larry was a long-time member of Neill’s Creek Baptist Church in Angier and often attended Summerville Presbyterian Church in Lillington.
Larry was an avid Duke fan and coached T-Ball teams, church league women’s softball and a men’s softball team sponsored by Angier Paint and Wallpaper. In retirement he was often seen enjoying the outside from his front porch chair or frequenting the Red Barn Restaurant for food and friendship.

A graveside service celebrating Larry’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on March 21st at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 2065 Old US Hwy. 421 Lillington, NC 27546. The family will greet friends following the service in the cemetery.
