Leroy “Roy” Holmes, Sr.

Leroy Holmes Sr. “Roy,” 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2018. Born in Coats in 1933, Roy spent most of his life in Garner where he was the longtime owner of Sapp’s Welding & Radiator, Inc. He was a loving father and husband of 64 years to his wife Janie, who preceded him in death in March of 2017. He was a hard-worker that committed his life to serving his community and his family. A devout Christian, Roy regularly attended services at Hayes Chapel Christian Church. Roy was a friend to everyone that knew him and was loved by many. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed frequent trips to Lake Gaston where he often fished with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roy was known for his big heart and loving nature, regularly conducting acts of kindness for family, friends and strangers alike. Roy was preceded in death by his three brothers; Mack Holmes, Ronzi Holmes, and Thomas Holmes and sister Jean Norris. Roy is survived by his two sisters, Verlene Barbour and Diane Matthews. He leaves behind his only son, Leroy Holmes “Junior” and daughter-in-law Jane. He is survived by his grandchildren Leslie Holmes Ives (Brandon Ives) and Jason Holmes (Trinity Holmes) and his five great-children. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, January 12 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.  A celebration of Roy’s life will be held at Hayes Chapel Christian Church on Saturday, January 13 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Devotional Gardens, Dunn. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hayes Chapel Christian Church, 315 E. Garner Rd. Garner, NC 27529.
