Raleigh-Lewis Howard Walker, 84, woke Thursday morning in the presence of the Lord. A native of Person County and longtime resident of Raleigh, Mr. Walker is the son of Mancey and Hassie Riley Walker. Mr. Walker is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Claude Walker; sister, Cora Walker Hall; son, Danny Walker and son-in-law, Terry V. Williams. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Myra Watkins Walker; daughter, Deborah Walker Williams and her husband, Ken Albrecht; daughter, Rhonda Walker; grandson, Danny and wife, Christy Williams; grandson, Bronson Williams and great-grandsons, Marshall and Mack Williams. Known among friends and acquaintances for his sense of humor, gorgeous white hair and distinctive shorter arm, Mr. Walker was an avid lover of family. He adored his wife, known to him as Doll, for all 61 years of marriage. He frequently refused to attend events unless all members of his family were invited. As a retired tinkerer, he would send his great-grandsons home covered in grease with pockets full of nuts and bolts. His unique sense of humor served him well as an employee of Pilot Mills and Pooles Pies. His attention to minute detail made him a valued press mechanic at Tipper Tie. In retirement years he spent many hours in his shop making wind chimes and wooden toys for his great-grandsons. He was a firm believer that anything could be fixed with a stick and a string. As a young man, Mr. Walker was often asked if having only one good arm was a handicap, to which he would reply, I have two good arms. The value of hard work and a good name were passed along to his daughters and grandsons, whom he spent many precious hours with. When asked what he was most proud of his grandsons for, he referenced Prov. 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. In the last weeks of his courageous, victorious battle with cancer, Mr. Walker spent his time wisely. Knowing that death has no victory, he praised God in the midst of his suffering and testified to his family and friends of the Christ in him, the hope of glory. He fought the good fight, he finished his course, he kept the faith. But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (I Thessalonians 4:13) Many thanks to Dr. JoEllen Speca of Rex Hematology Oncology Associates, and the staff at Hospice Home of Wake County for their loving care.
