Linda D. Spence, 79, of Garner, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on September 20, 2023.
Linda is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Edward C. Spence, Jr., and her daughters, Amanda Spence Allen and her husband Scott, and Erin Platts and her husband David, and her four grandchildren: Spence Allen, Gabriella Allen, Keely Platts, and Davis Platts. She also leaves behind her lifelong best friend, Barbara Baker, her bonus daughter, Janet Wolf, and other nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Linda graduated from the University of Richmond in 1966 with a degree in political science and history. A few months later, she married Ed and took a job teaching middle school science and history. Many of her students came from homes with little means, so she often brought homemade food to school to make sure they had something to eat, and she would personally visit the homes of struggling students to meet with their parents. In the 1970s, Linda and Ed moved to Smithfield, North Carolina, where they lived and raised their daughters until moving to Garner in 2007. Just as she took care of her students, Linda devoted her life to taking care of her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and other family members. She was an amazing cook who loved to read, to travel, and to work on her tan at Topsail Island.
A graveside service to celebrate Linda's life will be held at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Clayton, North Carolina, on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at 2 p.m. The family will visit with friends after the service.
Memorial contributions in honor of Linda may be made to Saint Andrews United Methodist Church at 1201 Maxwell Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603 , the Wake County SPCA, or your local library.
