Linwood Laverne Carter was born April 8, 1940 and entered God’s hands on April 23, 2022, at the age of 82. Linwood was a native of Garner, NC, where he lived most of his life and where he was active for many years in the Volunteer Fire Dept., Pop Warner football program and the care and upkeep of athletic fields for the Garner Trojans. In 1985, Linwood was the recipient of the Garner Senior Service Award presented for his contributions to Garner Senior High. Then, in 2021, Linwood was honored by being inducted into the Garner High School Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements as a student athletic and as a coach in the Pop Warner program. Linwood was one of the original seven officers employed to establish the State Capitol Police Force in 1967. He retired from the Force in 1992 at the rank of Lieutenant. Still a young man, Linwood found a new love in caring for and riding horses. He soon had many friends in the rodeo and horseback riding community. Nothing made him happier than camping trips with his friends to the mountains of Virginia and the trail riding adventures they enjoyed. Linwood is preceded in death by his parents, John E. Carter, Jr. and Carrie Pulley Carter. He is survived by brothers, Jerry G. Carter (Brenda) and Larry C. Carter (Kim); Nephews, Jay Carter (Erica), Joey Carter, and Tony Carter (Kristen); Nieces, Shelley Kling of Jacksonville, Fla. and Jill Adams (Brian) of Johnston Co., NC, and many great-nephews and great-nieces. Visitation will be Thursday, April 28th from 12:00 to 12:45 with services to follow at 1:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, NC. Entombment will follow at the Pinecrest Cemetery in Clayton, NC.
