Lydia Ophelia Kornegay

RALEIGH - Lydia Ophelia Kornegay, 90, of Raleigh, NC went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 20, 2023. She was born on May 1, 1933 in Goldsboro, NC to the late Samuel W. Alexander and Alice Ezzell Scott, to later be adopted by Robert Scott after Samuel Alexander's untimely passing.

Lydia is joining her late husband of 55 years, Blois Taylor Kornegay (d.2009) and fiancé of ten years, Landis Medlin (d. 2023).

She is survived by her loving children and grandchildren; daughter, Donna Mitchell and husband, Neil of Garner; son, Sam Kornegay of Raleigh; grandchildren, Sarah Mitchell, Katherine Mitchell Hering, and husband, Dennis Hering; and great grandson, Judah Hering. She is also survived by her brother, S. Rudolph Alexander of Greenville, NC, and many special nieces and nephews.

Lydia loved the Lord with all her heart and faithfully served Him at Tabernacle Baptist Church as a Greeter and Usher, VBS Volunteer, Sunday School Class President, and Outreach Leader. Graduating from Kings Business College, Lydia went on to serve as an administrative assistant in the NC DOT for over 30 years.

She will be remembered fondly as a loving mother, devoted friend, and Meme to her grandchildren. Lydia was known for always putting her best foot forward, and that was evident throughout her work, church service, and relationships. She will be most remembered for the big heart she wore on her sleeve to anyone she encountered.

The family will receive guests at 10:00 AM with funeral service at 11:00 AM on Friday August 25, 2023, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Raleigh. Private interment will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. All guests are invited to join the family at the home of Neil and Donna Mitchell for a reception immediately following the service.
