Raleigh- Margaret Brown McCaffity, of Raleigh died Wednesday June 12, 2013 with her family by her side. Margaret was born on May 20, 1930 in Jamesville, NC to the late Walter L Brown and Jessie Manning Brown. After graduating from Jamesville High School in 1948, Margaret attended Barton College (formerly Atlantic Christian College), earning a degree in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career in 1952 in Elizabeth City, NC. She taught school in Durham NC and then in Raleigh NC until 1962. Margaret stayed at home until she returned to work in 1974 to manage her husband Darwins dental practice. Margaret worked with her husband managing the practice for more than 20 years. Following her husbands retirement, Margaret worked for Hudson Belk at Crabtree Valley Mall for 10 years. She enjoyed working with the public and helping others throughout her varied career. Margaret was an active member of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church for more than 45 years. She was involved in all aspects of the life of the Church including the Christian Womens Fellowship and the Board of Elders. Margaret was instrumental in starting the Hillyer Memorial Christian Church Endowment Fund. Margaret was an active and devoted Alumna of her Alma Mater, Barton College. As an Alumna, she served the College in several capacities over the years. In 1996, Margaret was awarded Alumna of the Year. She loved her school and the numerous friends and acquaintances she had there. In her later years, Margaret enjoyed traveling with Darwin. They took several wonderful trips over the years throughout the country. Margaret and Darwin shared many loves, one of them being baseball. They traveled to Florida more than once to attend Spring Training games. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and could quote player statistics as well as anyone. Margaret will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife and mother who was dedicated to her family and service to others. She will be missed by all who knew her. Margaret was married for 60 years to Dr. Darwin W. McCaffity who predeceased her in December 2012. She is survived by her son, Darwin W. McCaffity, Jr. (Kim) of Wake Forest, daughter Laurie Jane Outland (Tracy) of Clayton, daughter Elizabeth E. McCaffity of Raleigh, and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6:00pm-8:00pm Friday June 14, 2013 at Bryan- Lee Funeral Home 831 Wake Forest Rd in Raleigh. Funeral Services Saturday June 15, 2013 at 1:00pm at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, 718 Hillsborough St, Raleigh. Graveside services to follow at Raleigh Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hillyer Memorial Christian Church Endowment Fund or the Barton College Scholarship Fund.
