Margie Perry Davis

Raleigh -Margie Perry Davis passed away on January 27, 2013. She was born September 4, 1926 in Millbrook, the fifth child of the late Eddie and Bessie Perry. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years Thomas Hill Davis. Margie grew up in Millbrook, a member of the fifth generation of Perrys to live in what was then a small rural community. She often talked about riding her horse down Litchford Road, now a busy thoroughfare. Margie graduated with a B.A. in Business and Sociology from Meredith College in 1947. She received her Master of Education from North Carolina State University in 1968. In 1962, she began teaching Distributive Education at Garner Senior High School, where she would teach and later serve as a guidance counselor for 29 years. Margie was a devoted teacher. Under her tireless supervision, her students won national awards in marketing. She was active in the distributive education field and in 1969 was elected president of the National Association of Distributive Education Teachers. Margie was a dedicated member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church for 63 years. She was an active participant in the Townsend Couples Class, serving as class president. She also served as a Deacon, as Director of WMU and as a Sunday School Teacher. Margie was an avid gardener. She was a charter member of the Coley Forest Garden Club, serving as its president. She was also a nationally certified flower show judge, who judged competitions throughout the state as well as in Virginia and South Carolina. In addition to her love of flowers, Margie enjoyed playing bridge with good friends. She also enjoyed travelling, visiting all 50 states as well as 12 countries. Her greatest passion, however, was dancing with her beloved husband Tom. Margie is survived by her two sons, Thomas Hill Davis, Jr. and wife Dee Wilson Davis of Raleigh and Dr. Stanley Wayne Davis and wife, Kathryn Wyatt Davis of Sanford. She is also survived by five grandchildren Thomas Hill Davis, III and wife Eleanor Scott Davis of Winston-Salem, Alexander Erwin Davis of Columbia, S.C., Julia Hadley Davis of Washington, D.C., Hunter McDowell Davis of Raleigh and Victoria Montgomery Davis of Sanford. Margie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 31 at Montlawn Memorial Park. Afterward, the family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the Church Parlor at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27608 or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
