Garner - Marjorie McRay was born on July 20, 1932 in Stanardsville, Virginia to the late James and Arlene (Brock) Brown and on Saturday, January 23, 2016 Marjorie slipped into her final rest to spend eternity with our Lord. Marjorie attended the District of Columbia Public Schools. After her formal education she had several careers ranging from textiles, floristry, home health care and transportation. Her longest work history was in transportation where she served the community for more than 25 years as a Manager at EZ Method Driving School in Washington, DC, where she retired. Marjorie was the devoted mother of Arthur Jackson, Shirley Gladney and Eric McRay. She loved gardening and bargain shopping, but she especially loved cooking and family gatherings. Her house on Shepherd Street in Washington, DC was a memorable place to celebrate holidays, family and friendships. Each year, family members and friends would gather at her house for her favorite holiday, Christmas, met by a bountiful amount of her home cooked meals, luscious desserts and endless gifts under the tree. Invitations to these gatherings were extended to neighbors and friends throughout the city. Marjorie’s Christian journey included a long history of serving on the Usher Board and in food missions at Corinthian Baptist Church in Washington, DC. Near the sunset of her life, in 2009, she moved to be near her son, Eric McRay, daughter-in-law, Frances, and their children (which she affectionately called “her babies”), Erica and Ethan. After transitioning to North Carolina, her traditional Christmas with lots of food and gift-giving continued. She loved all of her grandchildren, and enjoyed showering them with gifts and creating memories with them. She attended her son’s church, the Temple of Pentecost in Raleigh, which she affectionately embraced as her own. Before her health failed, she once again was drawn to serving the church in food ministry, and on a few occasions you could find her assisting in the kitchen at various functions, or serving families at funerals and other events when called upon. While at the Temple of Pentecost, Marjorie repented, was filled with the Holy Ghost, and was then baptized in Jesus name. She loved the preaching, enjoyed the choir singing, and loved the anointed atmosphere of the church. She was mostly moved with the love she was shown by the people of God, and spoke about it often. Marjorie was preceded in death by her first husband (Arthur Jackson), and son and daughter (Arthur Jackson, Jr. and Shirley Gladney), grandson (Derric Arthur Jackson), parents (James and Arlene Brown) and siblings (Michael, Bill, James and Marilee Brown and Ethel Watson), and her second husband (Reedy McRay). She is survived by her loving and devoted son (Eric McRay), grandchildren (Tracey, David Jr., Marjorie, Darryl, Erica and Ethan); great grandchildren (Sharonne, Sherrod, Shawn, ShyAnne, Antonio, Brian, Christopher, Christa, Kendra, LaShea, Mercedez and Darryl Jr.), and a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.
