Martha Robinson Swain

Martha Robinson Swain, age 83, died September 10, 2024 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.

Martha was born on September 22, 1940 in Liberty, South Carolina. She is predeceased by her husband Herb Swain, parents Charles and Edith Robinson, brother Bill Robinson, and sister Jane Robinson Vance. Martha grew up in Liberty and she attended Liberty High School where she met her husband Herb. They married in Spartanburg, SC on February 19, 1960 where Herb was a student at Wofford College. Later they moved to Garner, NC where they made their home for 57 years.

Martha worked at the North Carolina Department of Revenue and later at Deloitte and Touche in Raleigh. After retirement Martha’s passion for gardening filled her days. Her perennial flowers, roses, irises, and flowering vines were enhanced by the placement of arbors, bird houses, figurines and found objects. She enjoyed spending the summers with her granddaughters traveling to the beach and the mountains. She also enjoyed trips to Texas to see her son and his family.

Martha loved Christmas and always had a stunning Christmas tree filled with beautiful ornaments collected over the years. During her time with Alzheimer’s she began to think Christmas was always right around the corner.

She is survived by her sister Barbara McAllister, her daughter Elizabeth Hales (Craig), granddaughters Kristen Ess (Chris) and Kelsey Hales; great grandchildren Ellie Ess and Adam Ess; son Lee Swain (Tiffany), granddaughters Rachel Vitz (Cody), Lauren Swain, Avery Swain, and Alexx Swain; great grandchildren Harper Vitz, Lainey Vitz, Valentina Swain, and Liliana Swain.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Southside Church, 299 Carlton Street, Clayton NC 27520. The family will receive friends in the lobby following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
