Mary Emily Mohler Liner was a beloved wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother and
greatma. She passed away peacefully at home with her husband, Hugh Liner, by her side on
December 2, 2023. Mary was born May 12, 1932, in Rock Bridge Baths, VA to parents Florence
and Robert Mohler.
She graduated from Hillsborough High School and earned an associate degree in business from
the Women’s College of Greensboro, now known as UNC Greensboro. During her time at
college, she enjoyed the local staple Yum Yum Better Ice Cream. Mary and Hugh were married
on April 19, 1952, at Hillsborough UMC. In 1953, they moved to Raleigh to continue Hugh’s
education. She held many bookkeeping positions at North Carolina State University (NCSU)
while he continued his education. Hugh always indicated that whatever success he earned in
life was primarily due to the support and assistance he got from her. They worked as a team in
raising their two daughters, Joyce and JoAnn.
Mary had many passions that continued to grow throughout her life. Mary was an active
member of The NCSU Woman’s Club and her church. She was a devoted Christian who worked
hard to give back to the community around her and serve God every day. She also taught
herself to cook and bake, becoming famous in her family and among her friends for her
sourdough bread, pound cake and chocolate chess pie. One of her favorite activities was
playing in bridge clubs with her friends. During their retirement, Hugh and Mary enjoyed
traveling around the world, visiting many places including Belize, New Zealand, Tahiti, Canada
and several countries in Europe. Mary was a wonderful grandmother and devoted herself to
help raise her three grandchildren.
To know Mary was to love her. She lived her life fiercely and her family described her as one of
the strongest women to ever live. She loved her family and friends with her whole heart. Mary
will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her husband Hugh, daughters Joyce Liner Tynes and JoAnn Liner
Cullingford, son-in-law Robert Cullingford, sister Helen Strayhorn and brother-in-law Robert
